The Emancipation of The Buxton Memorial
Size: 45x27mm
Medium: Lasercut timber with glass
Edition auctioned for charity Article 25.
Edition exhibited ING Discerning Eye 2022 at the Mall Galleries
The current Buxton Memorial sits quietly in Victoria Tower Gardens opposite parliament and is a nonfunctioning Gothic Revival water fountain that commemorates the emancipation of slaves in 1834. This piece reimagines the memorial, at a greater scale, more fitting of the liberation it celebrates.
The first edition of this piece was auctioned for charity Article 25 in November 2021. The auction raised over £37,000 for the charity.
Congratulations to the lucky bidder and the Buxton family.
A second edition was exhibited at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition 2022.
